The limited body of work exploring scholar reasoning about the unity and diversity of living methods has uncovered different findings. In some circumstances, analysis suggests that in older children and young adults, reasoning about residing techniques could remain extremely fragmented and taxon-specific at explicit scales (Fig. 4a; e.g., Freidenreich et al. 2011; Kargbo et al., 1980; Nehm & Ha, 2011). In other instances, research has shown that pupil reasoning may develop into unified problem-solving heuristics within a biological scale (Fig. 4b; e.g., Schmiemann et al., 2017). Much less work has explored student reasoning about biological phenomena throughout organic scales (Fig. 4c, d). Work in genetics education suggests that crossing these ontological levels or scales is inherently challenging for college students (Freidenreich et al. 2011; Kargbo et al., 1980; Nehm & Ha, 2011; Nehm, 2018).
